Interested in taking Hula lessons? Creative Directors Alana and Tiaina Ta'ala also teach hula for Na'au Ali'i School of Dance. We welcome anyone to come learn, the youngest we take is 4 yrs old. Our goal for each of our students is to firmly know their basic hula skills. Our belief is that if your feet already know what to do, it makes learning any hula easy, all you have to do is add the hands. Na'au Ali'i School of Dance holds Ho'ike (recitals) for our students to show their family and friends what they have learned. Our students will also learn how to use the 'uli'uli (feather gourd), pu'ili (split bamboo), 'ili'ili (smooth rocks) and ipu (gourd).

Cost

We charge a minimal fee of $25 a month for an hour of lesson each week.

Want to learn hula on your vacation

We also offer lessons for those who come to Big Island on vacation. Join one of our classes for just $15 per lesson!

Our Hula Background
Our style is unique and graceful. Our Kumu is Kaimikahu Matthews who came from Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu, John Pi’ilani Watkins, Joseph Kamoha’i Kahauleilio, and Aunty Ma’iki Ai’u. Alana has been dancing for over 15 years and Tiaina her daughter has been dancing for 13 years. Both love to share their dancing knowledge with anyone willing to learn.
Other Dance History
Alana and Tiaina both have had training in Tahitian, Samoan, and Maori. Currently we do not teach these cultural dances in our dance school but have added Tahitian to our keiki Intermediate Level 2 class.
